Some wind jobs created somewhere in England at some point

Siemens has recently announced that at a date yet to be announced it will open a factory producing offshore wind turbines, in north-east or east England. They expect 700 jobs will be created.

On the news Government ministers fell over themselves to hail the new dawn of green manufacturing jobs. But this is one factory, creating only hundreds of jobs – not the tens of thousands the Government was dangling before us when the Vestas wind turbine blade factory on the Isle of Wight closed last summer.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow has made a bid for Vestas workers who lost their jobs to have an option on one of the new jobs. But even if that is possible, to get one of those the workers must be prepared to move… somewhere.
