E.ON announcement: no new coal, not for a few years, anyway

Read responses to E.ON’s announcement that they are shelving plans for a new coal-fired power-station at Kingsnorth in Kent.

It undermines the government’s quest to find the philosopher’s stone, I mean, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology, since E.ON were supposed to be researching this to fit it at the new plant.

This is great environmental news, but since I am from Kent and lived down the road from Kingsnorth for many years, this announcement also underlines for me the importance of forging a real alliance between the environmental movement and the labour movement and working-class people generally. The Medway Towns are an unemployment disaster zone, and there will be many working-class people today in that area who will not celebrate but curse the loss of jobs that would have been created at Kingsnorth.

For me, this is all the more reason to get involved in Workers’ Climate Action (WCA), because it is just these sorts of dilemmas that the campaign exists to address. The WCA conference is on this Saturday and planning meeting on Sunday. More details on the Facebook page or here.
