Tripods by the Medina – the Vestas blade blockade digs in

Tripods by the Medina: the view from Vestas Marine Gate on 10 September 2009

There has been a lot of activity by the Marine Gate in the last 24 hours, with police and security stepping up their interventions. But the workers and campaigners at the Vestas factory in Newport, Isle of Wight are hanging on and digging in. This morning they erected a tripod at the Marine Gate and are taking it in turns to occupy it (see picture).

They need reinforcements as the police and security are becoming humourless, and the company is likely to try and move the blades sooner rather than later. If you can go down and want more details, email savevestas@gmail.com.

The campaign has come a long way and the day of action on Thursday 17 September will be an important political occasion. But the main act at the moment is the blockade on the Isle of Wight. If you can visit or raise money to assist someone else to visit or stay there, please let us know. Thank you.

For updated information on getting to the Island and other useful information for the day of action on 17th September see the ‘Get Involved’ page.

  1. I thought you would be interested to know that I contacted Ed Milibands office (by email twice) regarding a new turbine project I am developing (and have had the initial study completed by a UK University supported by Regional Development Agency and EU funding) and how it might have been benefit to Vestas Workers / IoW.

I have a utility company interested in installing the prototype to test it, high-growth potential, employment and export opportunities, I got a generic reponse to the first, no response to the second.

They have no schemes to “aid optimising it – see making it worth more” and that is why its now going with me to Canada…the Labour Government are incapable of anything but wasting money and spin.
